Midwest Tandem Rally 2003
We did the Midwest Tandem Rally. It was in Columbus Indiana, put on by the HOOT's... Friday night they had a cook out about 5 miles away from the host hotel. So we rode our tandem and tag-a-long.. It was a nice ride.. Kim was worried because there were quite a few hills in this short ride. I was having a blast.. On the way back we were next to another tandem and we all heard something hit the ground.. I checked to see if our lights were all there and they were so we thought nothing of it. On Saturday morning, we got up and it was very foggy.. The mass start was set for 9:00. We were one of the last in line.
If you click on the pictures it will take you to them in their original size, each is about 1.5 megabytes..
Pictures: Foggy mass start on Saturday. Myself, Kim and Morgan taken by another rider with our camera. Thanks...
We headed out and went on this really cool bridge. This picture was taken from the back of a Quint by Courtney, daughter of Mark from Precision Tandems. Here is their account of the ride Precision Tandems MTR 2004
There were over 500 teams there were Tandems, Single Tag-A-Longs, Tandem Tag-A-Longs, Triples, Quads, and one Quint. They really did a nice job marking the route with "Dan Henrys". I didn't need to look at the map once.. The scenery was gorgeous.. We ran in to Greg and Judy May at the rest stop on Loop A. I have not seen them in about 15 years. Greg ran the South West Cycling Singles in the Cleveland area. That is where he met Judy. We had another 18 miles to go to the lunch stop. It was located at a Church. We ran in to Bill & Gwen Long from Berea, Ohio and Gary and Sue Buck from Dayton, Ohio. We did a night ride with them back in June with Century Cycles. Lunch was very good. Everyone was very nice to us. We did 42 miles before we got back to the hotel.

Morgan in front of the tandem at the lunch stop. Mark and the stokettes on their Quint. This picture I also received from Mark for my site.
That evening there was a free concert with a couple of opening acts, Fireworks then Davey Jones from the Monkeys.. We stayed for about an hour and a half. While we were riding back to the hotel, we stopped on the "People Trail" to watch the fireworks.. Total Mileage for Saturday was 45 miles. Great job Kim and Morgan!!!
On Sunday, Kim was not feeling very good so we decided to just wait until later, ride the people trail, and do about 15 miles. Morgan and I went to take some pictures of everyone at the starting area.
Pictures: Various pictures from the mass start on Sunday.
Kim was feeling better so we decided to go on a bicycle ride.. We got the bikes ready and were all set when we noticed that Morgan's bike had a broken bolt.. That is what we heard on Friday. That means that we rode all day Saturday with it broke.. Now that we saw it, we didn't want to chance it by going ridding... Kim has always worried about doing a lot of miles with Morgan, after doing 45 miles the day before Morgan said she was sad because we didn't go riding with the group. I told her that it would have been about the same number of miles as the day before and that didn't phase her at all.. So we decided to go for a walk. Kim and Morgan turned back after a little while bec
ause it was so hot. I walked up to the bridge so I can get a picture...

Later on Sunday we went to the hands on place for kids at the commons. Morgan had a great time.. She really enjoyed playing with the bubbles..

Even know this was only our second rally we were impressed with how well everything was planned from the rest stops to watching the bikes at the MTR parking at the concert... The HOOT's really did a great job. .
